Reel Youth Media @ Scottish Parliament for Holyrood Rocks

Reel Youth Media have been invited along to the Scottish Parliament tomorrow to create some interesting interviews with young people attending the Holyrood Rocks event.

We’ll be taking a small production team along to the parliament tomorrow afternoon to ask young musicians, participants and visitors three short questions about the future of Scotland and what they think of Scottish music.  The event will be hosting workshops, stalls and an open mic stage in the afternoon before the main event : the final of the Holyrood Rocks Battle Of The Bands in the evening.  Participants have been taking part in regional heats for the competition across Scotland with bands and performers being bussed in from all over the country to take part in the final.  The evening will be rounded off with a headline performance by Withered Hand.

Holyrood Rocks is being organised to help engage young voters in the upcoming Scottish Parliament elections.  Voter registration cards will be available at the event so if you are going along tomorrow and you’re over 16 and haven’t already registered to vote then be sure and fill one out.

We’re looking forward to the event and hopefully getting lots of great responses to our interview questions.  We’ll be back at South Bridge Resource Centre next Saturday for another special project… watch this space for more information!

We’re Off To #artcore Bruncheon Tomorrow!

The Reel Youth Media team will be heading off to Out Of The Blue Drill Hall tomorrow where #artcore will be hosting a special Bruncheon event to celebrate the launch of their new print studio.  There will be lots of live music and young artists exhibiting their work as well as some tasty food.

Our team have been invited to create some videos of the event featuring live performances from young bands and performers and will also be creating a short promotional video to promote the new print studio and the work being done by the team at #artcore.  There is a full programme of live music from 11am until 4pm featuring a range of different acts from across the city.  Our team will be busy with audio recording equipment, working with the live sound engineers from #artcore, to create the best possible audio recording of the performances.  We’ll also have have our camera team setting up tripods and sliders to find the best angles and lighting to film the event.  We’re going to have a busy day!

There’s also going to be lots of young artists and illustrators exhibiting their work and showing off some of lovely designs they’ve printed using #artcore’s Riso Printing service.  This printing method creates beautiful prints, similar in style to screen printing and #artcore are offering this service with a 50% discount for young people and is great for creating posters, flyers and zines. Here’s a little bit more information..

The bruncheon event runs from 11am until 4pm at Out Of The Blue Drill Hall, Dalmeny Street, Leith.

Performers include:

Sight Of Mind
The Factory
Tom Kane
Magnus Turpie
Bonnie Higgs
Emma Milligan
Lucie Hall

Edinburgh Youth Music Festival 2015

Reel Youth Media will be taking part in this years Edinburgh Youth Music Festival on Saturday 12th September 2015, and will be on hand with cameras and audio recording units to record and document all the exciting stuff that’s happening at the event.

This years Edinburgh Youth Music Festival is being coordinated by the #artcore team, based at Out Of The Blue Drill Hall in Leith and Reel Youth Media are very much looking forward to getting busy at this years event.  There will be a diverse programme of workshops and drop in sessions for young people of all ages to stimulate their musical senses as well as performances from top young local bands and performers.  It is promising to be a cracking afternoon of music!

There will also be stalls and information on lots of different musical opportunities for young people to get involved with across the city and Reel Youth Media will be there to open our doors to the festival going public and see if we can find any young people looking at getting involved in making music videos and digital media content.  Our team will be running around the event taking pictures, video and generally making a nuisance of themselves but should be easily recognisable in their ultra hip Reel Youth Media T Shirts… the ‘must have’ fashion piece of 2015!

You can find out more about the Edinburgh Youth Music Festival at their website HERE.

You can also see what the latest information on the event is by following them on Facebook HERE.

We hope that some of you will be along at the event too so be sure and say hello!

Totally Sound @ The Fringe 2015

Totally Sound at the Fringe WEB

The Reel Youth Media team were called upon to produce a poster for Totally Sound who were taking part in the Edinburgh Festival Fringe for the first time this year.  We also went along to one of the performances to capture some still images.

This event fell at an unfortunately awkward time for Reel Youth Media with most of our team having just started beck at school for another academic year and the event taking place right in the middle of the working day on a Tuesday.  In dvance of the event Reel Youth Media had created a striking A3 poster to publicise the event which was also sent out as an e-flayer and distributed on social media platforms.

For the first performance we were also able to have a camera person get along to the show to take some still images of the performers.  It was a fab afternoon of music too and the professional lighting and staging gave the opportunity to capture some fantastic still images of the performers. It wouldn’t surprise me if these images are used on future promotional materials for these acts!

Reel Youth Media @ Pride Youthspace

On 20th June the Reel Youth Media team accompanied a group of young performers to take part in an open mic session at Pride Youthspace @ Potterow…. we took a camera along.

The event was a huge success for LGBT Youth with lots of young people taking part in allsorts of activities and there was a real sense of celebration in the air.  The Open Mic stage featured several performers who we’ve known for quite some time… and others who we hadn’t seen in quite a while so it was great catching up.

With several of the performers also taking part in the Totally Sound Showcase later that evening, it was a perfect opportunity for a warm up performance to a very friendly and supportive crowd.

We had a really fun afternoon at Pride Youthspace and the performers all remarked on the vibrancy and energy about the event.  We certainly hope we can be along again next year and would like to thank Nigel Chipps and all the splendid young people who made the event possible!

Totally Sound Showcase 2015 @ The Bongo Club

The Reel Youth Media team were kept busy at The Bongo Club on Saturday 20th June as they captured digital media content from Totally Sound’s end of term showcase event…

The team were fully equipped with cameras, audio recording unit and a laptop to gather as much content from the event as we could coordinate.  The sound engineer at The Bongo Club was particularly helpful during the soundcheck to enable us to feed live audio directly from his sound desk in groups for mixing in post production.  This meant we were able to create some fantastic audio recordings for the performers.

There were so many highlights from the evening that it is difficult to single out any one performer or band however, Holly Powers’ song ‘Wild Flowers’ was certainly a show stopping moment.  We were lucky enough to have our cameras capturing video at this point and, despite missing the first couple of seconds of audio, we were able to produce a pretty good video clip of the performance.

You can see some of the still images from the event HERE.

As well as capturing video, still images and audio from the event it was also the first time we had the opportunity to see our stage projections come to life behind the performers at the event.

You can take a look at the graphics we created for the event HERE.

Reel Youth Media @ The Meadows Festival 2015

It was an eventful weekend at The Meadows Festival for the Reel Youth Media team…

meaadows festival 1The team arrived on Saturday morning, prepared for a day of digital media activity before the decision was made to cancel the days events.  Unfortunately due to high winds and several of the standing structures being blown over (including the Futures Stage!) the entire day was called off… much to the dismay of all the stall holders, performers, festival goers and ourselves.

We determined to make up for it on Sunday…

The following day the team arrived for the days events and the Meadows Festival was bathed in glorious sunshine.  Stages were being set up, musicians and performers were arriving and stall holders were getting set up.  The team et about establishing their base at the Futures Stage and setting up camera rigs, audio recording units, tripods and other bits and pieces.

Over the course of the next 6 hours or so the team captured several hours of video footage, audio recording and lots of still images.

After long day at the Futures Stage we moved over to the Red Dog Music Stage to catch a little bit of Eliza Carthy’s headline set.  Eliza took the time after her performance to give an interview to our team about her experience playing at the Meadows Festival and how she got started in music.

It was an exhausting day but a fantastic experience for the team who were working together for the first time.  So much footage was collected that they will next be faced with the daunting task of assembling video clips for uploading online.

Look out for upcoming video content from the Reel Youth Media team…
